Battle of Marianna

Little Known Fact
A war-time sketch of Brig. Gen. Asboth
showing his normal field attire and one of
his large greyhound dogs.
Lt. Col. Andrew B. Spurling,
who commanded Asboth's
2nd Maine battalions during
the Marianna raid, was a
colorful charater. A former
sea captain, gold miner and
California bear hunter, he
was fond of dressing in a
Confederate uniform and
slipping through the Southern
lines on scouting
expeditions. He was
promoted to brigadier
general at the end of the war,
recevied a Congressional
Medal of Honor and later
became a noted Chicago
industrialist and developer.
