The raid against Marianna began on
September 18, 1864, when Federal
troops began moving west from present-
day Gulf Breeze along the old Military or
Jackson road.

Although it is rarely
mentioned in history books
today, the Battle of Marianna
was widely covered in Civil
War newspapers. The New
York Times, for example, ran
a series of articles about the
battle, including at least one
front page report.
